Research Experience

Current projects in ODU’s CeME Lab:

  • Disaster Downtown: Researching current methods and designing a new system dedicated to crowdsourcing necessary information and data management during disasters and emergencies.
  • Usable DRM: How can Digital Rights Management become more usable for consumers? Can we maintain IP rights and allow for flexibility in use? Is a new IP model really necessary with the spread of participatory cultures? Or, are there layers within the current IP model that are unnecessary barriers for both users and IP rights holders?
Other projects:
  • Studying the usability of desktop and web-based social media management applications. How can users better manage and aggregate information from multiple SM platforms?

Research Interests

I study affect and emotion in user experiences. My work attempts to develop an analytical model that can be used for both cultural research and interaction design. As media content and the design of users’ interactions has diffused across different platforms and user interfaces, users’ affective responses become fundamental to user experiences. To that end, my research spreads across all these interests:

Activity Theory

Narrative and Rhetoric in game spaces

Interaction Design

Design of Communication

New Media

Participatory Cultures

Transmedia Storytelling
